A
festival of Indian films was organized in Udine by the Società Indologica
"Luigi Pio Tessitori" in collaboration with the Società Udinese
Teatri e Cinematografi, the Directorate of Film Festivals of the Government
of India and the Embassy of India. The two-day festival, which took place on
21 and 22 July 1995 at the Ariston cinema, offered an opportunity to enjoy some
of the most significant works produced by Indian film-makers over the last forty
years. The five films featured were shown in the original language with English
and French sub-titles and were selected from those which took part in Chhaya
'95, the festival of Indian film held at Rome in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni
from 23 June to 7 July 1995. The works chosen for Immagini dall'India were
Maya Memsaab (Ketan Mehta, 1992), Devi (Satyajit Ray, 1960), Khandar
(Mrinal Sen, 1983), Roja (Mani Ratnam, 1992) and Awaara (Raj
Kapoor, 1951). The following speakers took part in the inaugural ceremony of
the festival: H. Viswanathan, deputy chief of mission of the Embassy of India,
