In
collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Pordenone, the Società
Indologica promoted an initiative that was able to add an economic and financial
dimension to the overall view of Indian culture provided by purely arts-focused
events. The economic seminar entitled The Indian market: opportunities for
growth and expansion held on 7 November 1995 at the Chamber of Commerce
building in Pordenone was introduced by the Chair of the Chamber, Augusto Antonucci,
with the participation of His Excellency the Indian Ambassador N. K. Bakshi.
In his speech, the Ambassador highlighted the increasing interest of Italy in
the Indian sub-continent, which was recently confirmed by the official visit
of the Italian Head of State Oscar Luigi Scalfaro. The state visit took place
in February 1995 on the occasion of the inauguration of the XI Trade Fair of
Technology and Engineering, where Italy had the role of India's partner. Papers
were read by Maurizio Miranda, chair of the Indo-Italian Institute for Trade
& Technology, Rome (Opportunities for Technology and Industrial Cooperation),
R. H. Sinha, representative of the State Bank of India in Milan (Export-Import
Financing) and Sauro Mezzetti, director of the India project of Aster, the technological
development agency of the Regional Authority of Emilia-Romagna (Problems
and Prospects in the Indian Market for Italian Medium-sized and Small Businesses).
Also present at the seminar was a representative of the Birla group, a major
Indian financial group with interests in manufacturing, the car and textile
industries, and in paper, construction and software. Birla has offices in Africa,
Europe, Indonesia and the United States as well as in India. In conjunction
with the seminar, in addition to the photographic exhibition Tessitori in
Rajasthan: 1914-1919 there was a showing of the documentary Luigi Pio
Tessitori. Pagine di Diario and a number of talks.
